Image: Brad Nelms, Assistant Professor in Plant Biology, was featured in UGA Today for his research on pollen grains that was published in Science on January 28. Before this study researchers did not know when maize pollen starts to express its own genetic information. This information will allow for selection studies that can help us better understand how plants adapt to changing environments, and ultimately could help speed up crop breeding in the face of climate change. Michelle Momany, a Professor in Plant Biology, was featured in UGA News for her research on the fungus Aspergillus fumigatus which is widespread in the environment and may cause diseases in some people. This research, in collaboration with Marin Brewer from UGA Plant Pathology and PBIO graduate students Brandon Mangum and Earl Kang, was published in the February issue of G3: Genes, Genomes, Genetics. This study showed, for the first time, that compounds used to fight fungal diseases in plants are causing resistance to antifungal medications used to treat people.
