Image: Burlyn Michel, who turned 100 on March 7, is an Emeritus Professor of the UGA Department of Plant Biology. After attending Purdue University, he served with the U.S. Army Air Force in Germany during World War II. He earned his PhD from the University of Chicago in 1950. After spending seven years as Professor of Botany in Iowa, Michel and his family moved to Athens in 1958 where he served 30 years as a professor in the Botany Department, now the Department of Plant Biology, before he retired. According to Wayne Ford’s article in The Athens Banner Herald, square dancing has kept Burlyn Michel active and his passion for photography now provides him with many great memories. He lives in the retirement facility of TerraBella Epps Bridge in Athens.
